High cholesterol is one of the major risk factors for cardiovascular disease that is the number one cause of death in the United States. Since there is no such thing as a 'magic bullet' that can make cholesterol disappear, the combination of certain foods with prescribed medicines can help lower cholesterol and protect your heart.

Dietician Patricia Bannan, author of Eat Right When Time is Tight recommends some cholesterol-lowering foods, some of which may surprise you.

According to Bannan, one of the best foods to manage cholesterol is strawberries. Strawberries contain many heart-healthy substances, including phytochemicals, vitamin C, folic acid, potassium, fiber and phytosterols that can actually inhibit cholesterol absorption.

This is in line with the findings of researchers from the University of Oklahoma on the link of dietary supplements in the form of frozen strawberry powder and then dried with 11 percent decrease in bad cholesterol (LDL) in participants who are obese for two months.

Lean beef is another excellent food for cholesterol. While eating too much red meat can sacrifice your body, a study found that eating 4.5-5 ounces of lean beef a day can reduce bad cholesterol or LDL.

These include popular cuts of meat such as sirloin steak, tenderloin, T-bone and 95 percent lean beef.

Serving 3 ounces of lean beef itself contains 150 calories and 10 essential nutrients such as protein, zinc and iron.

"A recent study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that eating lean beef daily as part of a healthy heart diet helped reduce bad cholesterol levels by as much as 10 percent - or equivalent to other recommended heart-healthy diets," Bannan said. As reported by Fox News, Wednesday (11/04/2012).

Other Branan-recommended cholesterol-lowering foods include green tea, flaxseed and dark chocolate. But it is also important for us to make lifestyle changes such as more exercise, reducing stress and getting enough sleep, "he said.
